General link building is the process of identifying sites with content that relates to your own, who are not in direct competition with yourself and asking the webmaster of the site if they would consider a reciprocal link between the two sites.
As mentioned this is very dependant on the quantity and quality of the content on your website. If you have loads of great content with high general interest, link building is going to be a breeze. If, like the majority of people, your content is a little ‘thin on the ground’, you may have to work harder for your links.
Do you have a hobby or an interest? What do you do for a living? Everybody knows at least one subject that other people will find interesting. What are you planning to sell? Do some research and put together some information other people will appreciate. Good content really will make the job of
optimizing your site for search engines a lot easier.
If you are really struggling to generate your own content, it’s also possible to find articles that can be reproduced on your website. There are sites that allow many different writers to post informational articles on a variety of subjects. These articles can be copied and reproduced as information on your own website. (In some cases, the writer requests that you reference him/her and create a link from your site to theirs.)
Some examples of this type of site can be found at the following locations:

There are also automated tools that generate content; you enter a keyword and they generate the content accordingly. Some sites that sell utilities that operate in this way can be found at the following locations:

Once you have your content in place, create outbound links to other sites that you think your users will find interesting. Then create a list of third-party sites from which you would like to receive inbound links. (Competitors should not be used for your outbound links or approached for your inbound links)
A good way to produce your inbound request list is to search Google for your keywords and related expressions, look for sites that relate to your own but do not directly compete. Analyse the list, which sites are likely to give you a link and out of those sites, which links will give your site the best advantage.
