About
My name is Chris Packer. I am a webmaster, business owner and all round technology lover.
I have been in the computer industry for well over 20 years originally working in 1st & 2nd line support and then into 3rd line projects and IT infrastructure implementation. Most of this time was spent working as an IT contractor for several different companies. My last contract finished in 2001 and was spent contracting for Barclays funds. During the 3.5 years I spent with Barclays they decided to sell the department (Barclays Funds and B2) as a going concern. I spent the final year at Barclays shutting the site down (a far more technically challenging process than you might think). Because this process was the reverse of what I would normally do I decided it was the perfect time to move on and take on a new challenge so I decided to start and run a business instead.
I was very lucky at Barclays… My earnings were quite high due to level of work required over the final months. I was also given the opportunity to purchase the contents of the server room (for a nominal fee) in return for data cleansing all the server equipment. The earnings and the resale of all the equipment gave me a considerable sum of money and afforded me the time for a little experimentation.
With little more in my business plan than “Buy stuff from Asia and sell it in the UK on the internet” I set off on my current path. This proved to be a very shaky business plan to say the least and consequently the first venture failed miserably.
Next came a stroke of luck, I found and ordered 20 Wireless spy cameras from a company china, sent the money via TT and waited for them to arrive. When they did eventually arrive, I placed them on a page with a bit of info, did a little CPP and all 20 sold within a week. This was the beginnings of what is now pakatak.co.uk a regular going concern with regular turnover of $650,000 to $800,000 per year.
Several years later, I own, run and administrate several on-line niche websites. I am still involved in the day-to-day administration of Pakatak but with several staff working on this and the other ventures I am afforded the time to write blogs and the like.
The aim of this blog is to discuss what I have done during this period to make the successful ventures what they are today.
